Debuting for his First Fight At the U of MMA Robert Castro

Robert winning Gold at 5 Grappling

June 18th 2016 Robert Castro will be debuting and stepping in to the cage at The U Of MMA at The Novo. He’s been with us since 2013. He came in knowing he was going to sign up. This shy kid from Pacoima started in Coach Ryan Bradford’s fundamental class. He never talked much in class, he was very shy and quiet but a really good teammate. He came as often as he could. Now a blue belt under Coach Alder Hampel, and one of our instructors at the gym.

Taking the instructor program here at 10th Planet Van Nuys, it helped Robert get out his shell. He currently is teaching kids class and subbing for our fundamental classes. Our kids love his classes, he tries to teach them the same fundamentals that he was taught here in the beginning. Knowing that the fundamental curriculum is an important essential for the kids to have a strong Jiu Jitsu game at an early age.

Q: What is your training schedule like for this debut fight?

A: For this fight I’m getting one day off, two days off tops. I’ve been working with Milton a lot; he’s been helping me with my kicks. I’ve been  working with Coach Gabe, and Coach Alder. I’m also doing a little sparing at 818Boxing getting my  ass kicked by professional boxers. As a coach I need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I feel like that’s what’s making me a better fighter. The guys keep me here, no body trains as hard as these guys.

Q: What made decide you wanted to be a fighter?

A: I liked Rey Mysterio when I was younger, he always had a mask on. I used to live in an apartment with a lot of kids and we used to wrestle all the time on the grass. I guess from then as a kid I knew. As I got older I fell in love with boxing, one thing led to another and I found out about wrestling . I didn’t know anything about MMA until high school, I think it was 11th grade. I’m like bam, you know! This is what I want to do. I also liked watching old movies like BloodSport with Jean Claude Van Damme, and all the Bruce Lee movies. My Dad is  a big fitness geek so I think that had something to with it too.

Q: What is your favorite Technique?

A: I like all of them but if we are talking about Jiu Jitsu, I like the crucifix.

Q: Why did you choose to train here at 10th Planet Van Nuys?

A: Funny story, I started wrestling in 11th grade I was playing catch up, and I didn’t have attributes like the other athletes there. I was getting my ass kicked every day. I was a scrawny guy, I played sports but I struggled in wrestling. One day Coach Alder came to wrestling practice, we didn’t know the guy, we have a visitor, so we should practice extra hard that day. He showed some Jiu Jitsu moves, I’m like “This is it!”. It didn’t matter my strength or my size with Jiu Jitsu. I fell in love with it. I had the goal, get out of high school then come to 10th Planet Van Nuys, and the rest is history.

Q: Every fighter has a story, what is Robert Castro’s Story?

A: I think I’m still writing my story, I’m barley 21. I’m barely getting started. I’m looking forward to my debut , that was a goal with in itself. Getting there, and taking win, would be knocking down two of my goals. I feel like I’m on the right track. Ask me that 10 years from now and I’ll have a story.

Q: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

A: Professional athlete, for sure. Professional MMA, fighting at Lights Out Promotion, or RFA. I’m  not in a hurry, there are a lot of people in the UFC  even at 19.  I don’t compare myself to them, I’m going to get there eventually.
